New BoMs and a word of warning - 18/01/2015

Somewhat belated but the last two BoMs for 2014 are at

November, Whangarei

and

December, Okura.

You might guess from the names that both are in New Zealand.

A word of warning about VIADUCTS

Over recent months, I have become increasingly sure that typical railway viaducts cannot work properly as arches for carrying live load. This has serious implications for prediction of the ability of these bridges to carry increased loads. If I am right, it also means that any established procedures for "strengthening" the arches are doomed to fail and probably relatively quickly. It will take some time to fully investigate the implications but there is already enough corroborative evidence from monitoring bridges under load to make it appropriate to sound this warning. I hope to be able tom write up something more complete in the near future. In the mean time, if you, or anyone you know, is involved in schemes to increase traffic on a viaduct, please get in tuch with bill@obvis.com
